Bible Reading: Matthew 6:19-21; Luke 12:33-34

Kiana was sorting through her closet with her older sister Bethany. "I outgrew most of my clothes this year," said Kiana. "I'm glad we can give them to someone else who needs new clothes." She peered up at the top of the closet. "Can you see if there's anything up high? I can't reach it."

Bethany reached up and pulled a dusty and crumpled cardboard box off the top shelf. "Hey, what's this?" she asked.

Kiana's eyes lit up. "It's my treasure box."

Bethany inspected the dirty outside of the box and said, "It doesn't look very important. It's falling apart!"

"But it's what's inside that counts!" Kiana exclaimed. "I keep all my most special things in there, like the seashells we found at the beach last summer and the letters you wrote to me while you were away at university."

"Really? That's sweet of you," said Bethany, and she put the box aside on the floor. "I'll make sure we don't give that away."

"Yeah," said Kiana. "It's funny how all those little things are so important, even though they don't look important on the outside."

Bethany nodded. "You know, your box is a bit like one of my favorite Bible verses," she said. "Second Corinthians 4:7 says that knowing Jesus is like having treasure in jars of clay. Jesus died for our sins and then rose to life again, defeating sin and death. He's the greatest treasure of all, and He offers eternal life to anyone who trusts in Him! But we're like jars of clay, which don't look like much on the outside and don't last forever, like your cardboard box."

"But they hold treasure inside!" Kiana smiled.

Bethany snapped her fingers. "That's right! The bodies we have now don't last forever, and all our material things are temporary, but our treasure of life with Jesus is forever because He promises to raise us from the dead one day. It doesn't matter how big our house is or how expensive our clothes are or how much money we have because we hold God's treasure in our hearts. Knowing that, we can be generous with others and share what God's blessed us with. Most of all, that means sharing God's treasure of eternal life."

How About You?
Where do you keep the things that are most important to you? Life isn't about possessions or money or what we have or don't have. What matters most is that we know Jesus and accept His gift of eternal life. Be generous and share the gifts God has given you with others, especially the greatest treasure of all--Jesus.

Bible Reading: Psalm 56:3-4

Jonah was excited when he and his family arrived at their favorite state park in Florida. He loved camping and couldn't wait to hike the boardwalk trail through the slough. The wetlands were full of wildlife, and he knew they'd see lots of different kinds of birds and maybe even some alligators.

But before they went hiking, they had to have lunch. Jonah hopped around impatiently as Mom got out the food. "Can I go the playground?" he asked.

"Just be careful and watch for snakes," Mom said.

Jonah nodded and ran to the playground. From the top of the giant slide, he saw a kitten by the edge of the woods. What's that kitten doing over there? Jonah thought. An alligator might get him! Jonah quickly slid down the slide and darted after the kitten, but the kitten ran into the woods. Jonah ran in after him. When he finally caught the kitten, he looked around and didn't know where he was.

Jonah hugged the kitten close to him. " I think we're lost," he said.

As Jonah started walking in the direction he thought they'd come from, he remembered a Bible verse his mom had taught him. Psalm 56:3--When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. "Jesus," Jonah prayed, "I'm afraid, but I know You're with me because you died for me and promised never to leave me. Please help me find my way back. Amen."

Soon Jonah heard a voice shouting his name. It was a park ranger. "I'm over here!" Jonah yelled.

When the ranger brought Jonah back to camp, his parents gave him a big hug. "We were so worried!" Mom said.

The park ranger patted the kitten's head. "This little guy's family will be glad to see him. He wandered away from their campsite a few hours ago. But don't go off into the woods again by yourself, Jonah, not even for a kitten. It's dangerous, and you could have been hurt."

Jonah nodded. "Don't worry, I won't do that again," he assured them all.

After the ranger left, Mom brought the food to the picnic table and they sat down to pray. Jonah thanked God for their food and then said an extra big thank-you for being with him and keeping him safe.

How About You?
Have you ever been lost and afraid? It can be very scary, but the Bible assures us God is always with us and that He will help us. When you feel afraid, turn to Jesus. Give your fears to Him, knowing that He died and rose again so you could be with Him forever. He promises to be with you and help you when you're lost and afraid. Let's thank God for that today!

Bible Reading: Romans 5:17-21; 8:16-17

"We won! We won!" shouted August as he dashed into the house. "Our team won the archery competition at school today, and look what I got!" He held out a blue first-prize ribbon.

"That's great!" said Mom. "And you're always saying you're no good at archery. How many points did you make?"

"Only two, but it didn't matter, because I was on the best team--Jonathan's team. He's the best archer in the whole school." August grinned. "I could never win an archery competition on my own--most of the others on my team couldn't either--but Jonathan won it for us. He made so many points we wouldn't have had to make any. But the whole team got first-prize ribbons."

Mom smiled. "Well, I'm glad you had a good time today."

A couple days later, August and his parents attended a service at their church. On the way home, Mom commented on the message. "August, I thought of your friend Jonathan when Pastor Curtis talked about Christians being righteous in God's sight."

"You did?" August asked curiously. "Why would that make you think of him?"

"You told me you'd never be able to win first place in archery on your own, but the points Jonathan made in the competition counted for everyone on his team, right?" Mom asked.

"That's right," said August.

"Well, no person can ever be good enough to win eternal life with God on their own either," Mom said. "We're all sinners who have done wrong and fallen short in God's eyes. But because of what Jesus did on the cross, everyone has the opportunity to go to heaven. Jesus won eternal life for us when He died on the cross for our sins and rose again, and all who trust in Him are on His team. Just like all the kids on your archery team shared in Jonathan's victory in the competition, all Christians share in Jesus's victory over sin and death."

"Wow! Then we're members of the very best team of all, aren't we?"

Dad nodded. "As Pastor Curtis pointed out, when we trust in Jesus, God sees His righteousness in us instead of our sin. Then we all share in His victory and receive the prize of eternal life with Him. We're members of his eternal team."

How About You?
Are you on God's team? There's no way you can have victory over sin and death and win a place in heaven on your own. But Jesus has already won the victory, and He invites you to share in it. Will you trust Him as your Savior today? Then when God looks at you, He'll see Jesus's goodness--His righteousness--and you'll be on His team forever! Bible Reading: John 15:5-6

"Look at all the pumpkins!" Tanner exclaimed, excited to help Aunt Carolyn harvest her pumpkin patch. Orange pumpkins dotted the ground of the huge field.

Aunt Carolyn smiled. "Do you know each pumpkin has five hundred seeds inside?"

"No, but I know pumpkin pie tastes good," Tanner said.

Aunt Carolyn tousled his hair then carefully stepped into the field, making sure she placed her feet in powdery dirt and not on the plants.

Tanner lifted his leg high to avoid stepping on the vine. He stopped by a raised mound of dirt. "What's this?"

"This is where I planted the seed that grew into the pumpkin plant."

"One seed?" Tanner scrunched his face. "One seed made all these vines?" Several vines with large, dark green leaves shot out from the main plant like octopus tentacles stretching and curling across the field. "But there are several pumpkins on each vine!"

"One seed can produce a lot of fruit." Aunt Carolyn patted his shoulder. "After you pick the pumpkins, carry them over to the fence."

"Okay." Tanner plucked a small pumpkin from the plant, then a larger one. As he carried them to the fence, his foot tangled in a vine. He placed the pumpkins on the ground and carefully unwound the plant from his ankle. Once he was free, he gently worked the twisted vine into a straight line, plucking the ripe fruit from it as he went. When he finished, the vine stretched to the fence where Aunt Carolyn stood watching him. "I harvested eight pumpkins from this one runner!" Tanner exclaimed.

"It was a good vine." Aunt Carolyn set down a pumpkin. "It reminds me of Jesus. He provides us with spiritual nourishment, just like a healthy vine helps a pumpkin grow."

Tanner smiled and wiped his brow. "We learned in Sunday school that if we trust in Jesus, we can show His love to others and tell them about Him. Then they may decide to trust in Him too!"

"Right!" said Aunt Carolyn. "By sharing the good news of Jesus, we can bear good fruit just like these pumpkin vines. Planting the seeds of God's love helps others know and follow Him!"

Are you bearing good fruit for Jesus? If you know Him as your Savior, He nourishes you spiritually and helps you grow so you can share His love with others. Let Him nourish you as you study the Bible, go to church, and pray. Trust Him to help you love others through your daily thoughts and actions. As you bear His good fruit in your life, you'll be helping God's kingdom grow!

Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:4-14; Revelation 7:9-10

"Mom, there's so many beautiful things here!" Eliana exclaimed. She and her mom were visiting an art museum, and Eliana stood in awe of the different shapes, sizes, colors, and materials that made up the art displayed around every corner. But one particular piece stood out. "Is that painting sparkly?" asked Eliana.

Mom smiled. "Kind of," she said. "It's actually not a painting. It's a mosaic. It sparkles because it's made of tiny pieces of colorful glass arranged together to make a picture."

"Wow!" said Eliana. "I think we need a mosaic at home."

"You know," said Mom. "You can make mosaics out of anything. You just need a canvas and lots of tiny items in the colors you want. We should make one together."

And so they did. Once they got home, Eliana gathered small items from the craft bin in the colors she wanted, while Mom found a canvas from their supply cabinet. Soon, they were arranging the pieces on the canvas, making a picture of a tree.

As they worked, Mom spoke. "This reminds me of church," she said as she dabbed some glue on a green button and pressed it to the canvas.

"Huh?" asked Eliana.

"I guess that was a little confusing," said Mom with a laugh. "Let me explain. You know how at church everyone has different talents and backgrounds and many people at our church come from cultures different from our own? That's how God designed His church--His family--to be. He wants His people to have all kinds of beautiful differences--just like all the random pieces that make up our mosaic. Together they make up a beautiful church that glorifies Him."

Eliana nodded. "Mosaics are amazing because they are made up of lots of different pieces that create one big picture."

"Exactly!" said Mom. "The canvas holds all the random pieces together. In the same way, as Christians, we gather together in all the amazing ways Jesus made us to worship Him and remember that He saved us through His death and resurrection. That's what unites us and makes us into God's beautiful mosaic."

How About You?
What are some of the different talents, backgrounds, and cultures in your church? God created us all so differently, and when we become Christians, each of us is also given different spiritual gifts to use in serving the church. God uses the differences He created in us to help us grow in Christ and glorify Him together--just like a beautiful mosaic. As Christians, we are united by Jesus, and through the amazing diversity of His family, He creates a picture of His love and goodness.
